A senior Romanian diplomat was detained in Moscow on Monday while trying to obtain military secrets from a Russian citizen, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said.
The FSB identified the alleged spy as Gabriel Grecu, first secretary of the political department of the Romanian embassy in Moscow.
"Espionage equipment, revealing hostile activity towards Russia, was confiscated from the spy" the FSB said in a press release.
The security agency did not reveal the identity of the Russian source involved in the case in the interests of the ongoing investigation.
Espionage has been a common theme of Russian news of late. On June 27, ten individuals were arrested by U.S. law enforcement on suspicion of spying for Moscow.
They were quickly tried and flown out of the United States in an exchange for four people convicted of spying in Russia for the West.
