Rescuers from the Far Eastern Primorye territory rescued 33 people who were swept into the open sea while swimming in high waves, a spokesman for the local emergencies service said on Tuesday.
Rescuers said many visitors of the popular Livadiya beach in the city of Nakhodka went into the sea on Monday, despite strong winds and high waves. Many of them were carried away into the open sea while swimming on air mattresses.
"The swimmers were pulled onboard the rescue boat almost one after another. The rescue effort took nine hours," the source said.
It is unclear whether any people are listed as missing.
