The explosion of the second generator resulted in water blasting from the turbine base, which led to a partial collapse of the building’s structure between the first and fifth generating units. It also damaged the turbine room beams and some of the support columns. The turbine room was also flooded. In the clean-up effort, over 5,000 cu m of debris was removed, more than 277,000 cu m of water pumped out, and 325 tons of oil-containing emulsion collected.

As a result of the flooding, all of the generators sustained electrical and mechanical damage at the Sayano-Shushenskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant. A turbine oil solution was released (up to 50 tons) into the Yenisei River. A short-circuit fault in the generator control system shut the plant down.
By the end of 2010, generator No. 3 is to be commissioned bringing the installed capacity of the Sayano-Shushenskaya power plant to 2,560 MW. The plant will be operating in time for the 2010-2011 fall and winter seasons without a scheduled water discharge. The Sayano-Shushenskaya plant is to be fully restored by 2014.
The Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power plant is the largest hydropower plant in Russia and one of the largest in the world. Its power capacity is 6.4 million kW and the average annual electric power output is 22.8 billion kWh. A year after the accident, a new Orthodox Christian chapel was built in the vicinity.
