Russian canoeist Ivan Shtyl won a gold medal at the 200 meters men's single event (C1) at the Canoe Sprint World Championships on Sunday.
This is the first gold medal Russian national team won at the championship, which began on Thursday in Poznan, Poland, and ends on August, 22, Sunday.
However, this is a second medal Shtyl won on Sunday. Shtyl with another Russian athlete Yugeny Ignatov brought Russia a silver medal at the C2 canoe-double event.
Russian Maria Kazakova won bronze at the women's single competition.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had also enjoyed canoeing in his youth. In May the president took up the oars once again and rowed on one of the canals near Strelna, St. Petersburg.
