Magomedali Vagabov, the head of the underground militant movement in Dagestan and the mastermind behind the terror attacks on the Moscow metro, was killed in a special security operation in the Dagestani village of Gunib.
On the morning of August 21, members of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) blockaded a group of five militants in the village. When given the opportunity to surrender, the militants opened fire. During a short exchange of fire, all members of the group were killed.
There are no losses among the security forces or civilians.
Vagabov, born in the village of Gubden, Karabudakhkent District, Dagestan, had been on a federal and international wanted list for several years. Suicide bomber Maryam Sharipova, who, according to investigators, triggered the Lubyanka metro station bomb in Moscow on March 29, was his so-called Shariah wife.
Two blasts were detonated, 45 minutes apart, on March 29, 2010 at the Lubyanka and Park Kultury metro stations, killing 40 people and injuring 160.
