At least two militants were killed in a shootout with police in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia, a local police source said on Monday.
He said that Federal Security Service (FSB) officers were conducting a special operation near Ingushetia's largest city of Nazran.
"They stopped a car, which according to their information had militants inside, who opened fire on them in response," he said, adding that policemen returned fire, killing at least two militants.
"So far we have information about two militants killed, but this is not the final information and there may be more," he added.
Russia's mainly Muslim North Caucasus republics, especially Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, have seen an upsurge of militant violence lately, with frequent attacks on police and officials.
