Russia's media is failing to accurately report the lack of progress made by the state's anti corruption campaign, the Vedomosti business daily said on Thursday.

The paper quoted the Justice Ministry's Anti-Corruption Research Institute report as saying that the number of corruption cases has remained unchanged over the last three years.

The paper noted, citing statistics from a leading monitoring agency that this was despite a dramatic increase in media coverage of convictions.

The report said commercial bribery and abuse of office, as well as bribery as a whole were the most common forms of corruption.

The report also discovered only 270 of 1000 respondents from the Interior Ministry, the Prosecutor General's office and other regional bodies believe official information about the government's anti-corruption efforts.

Shortly after coming to office in 2008, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev declared corruption the number one threat to modern Russian society and vowed to significantly tighten anti-corruption laws.

Medvedev signed a bill in April on the creation of a national anti-corruption program for 2010-2011 aimed at eliminating corruption, including among top officials.
