Six years ago, on September 3, 2004, terrorists who took hostage over 1,000 people at a school №1 in Beslan, North Ossetia were finally liquidated. More than 300 people, most of them children, died in the attack. The hostages spent three terrible days in the school.
At 1.04 p.m. two powerful explosions and shooting started at the school. People were taken to cordoned-off zones. At 1.15 p.m. a group of hostages rushed out from the school.
At around 1.36 p.m. dozens of children left the school. TV channels showed how the freed children were hugged by their parents. At 1.50 p.m., according to eyewitnesses, Russian special forces units entered the school.
A total of 322 people died during the Beslan school hostage crisis. Photo: relatives of those killed in the Beslan school terrorist attack during an identification procedure in Vladikavkaz mortuary.
Beslan does not mark September 1, the start of the new school year, like the rest of Russia. Children do not sit at their desks – instead, together with adults they remember the day when the terrorists turned the beginning of the school year into three black days which transformed history into before and after the Beslan tragedy.
