Russia's Elena Dementieva advanced to the last 16 of the 2010 U.S. Open tennis tournament after a straight sets victory over Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova.

In the first set, 12-seed Dementieva trailed behind Hantuchova (24-seed) 5-2, but fought back to finish the match in an hour and a half 7-5, 6-2.

"I did not want to lose that first set. I was just trying to fight for every point and that was the key for the match. After that I felt so much more confident in the second set and played a more aggressive game," Dementieva said after the match.

Both players met each other on the courts 15 times with the Slovakian player winning four of them and only one of their last 10 encounters.

Dementieva, who had to retire from this year's French Open and withdraw from Wimbledon due to a calf injury, will play for the spot in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open against 5th-seed Samantha Stosur of Australia.
