The Russian team gained the first position in medal count at the first World Martial Arts Games in Beijing between August 28 and September 4.
The eight-day games brought together representatives of thirteen Olympic and non-Olympic martial arts, including aikido, judo, jujitsu, karate, kendo, Thai boxing and others.
The Russian sportsmen grabbed overall 39 medals, including 18 gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze medals. China came second with 31 medals and Ukraine, who is third, gained 23 medals.
The Russian team was headed by three times world sambo champion Alexander Yemelyanenko, European champion Anastasiya Baryshnikova and taekwondo prizewinner Anna Soboleva.
The World Martial Arts Games were held under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee. The next games will be held in 2013
