Suspected Russian crime boss Aslan Usoyan, better known as Grandpa Hassan, survived an attempt on his life in central Moscow on Thursday evening, a spokesman for investigators in the Russian capital said.
Law enforcement sources said earlier that Usoyan and a bodyguard identified as Bagramyan had died from gunshot wounds.
"At around 20:00 [Moscow time] near building 12/7 on Tverskaya Street there was an armed attack on Usoyan and Bagramyan. Both victims are alive in city hospitals. They are being given medical care," Vyacheslav Sovkov said.
He added that a criminal case had been opened into attempted murder.
A police source said that Usoyan is currently being operated on.
A RIA Novosti correspondent reported that the hospital is being patrolled by about 20 special police officers.
