The Russian Prosecutor General's Office on Monday sent Polish authorities an extradition request for Chechen separatist leader Akhmed Zakayev.

The Russian Prosecutor General's Office on Monday sent Polish authorities an extradition request for Chechen separatist leader Akhmed Zakayev.

Zakayev walked out of a Polish court on Friday evening several hours after he was arrested at Russia's request.

"The extradition request guarantees that in the event of Zakayev's extradition he will be guaranteed conditions and treatment consistent with international standards," a spokeswoman for the Russian Prosecutor General's Office said.

The spokeswoman also said Russia had evidence that Zakayev had tortured a captive while attempting to force him to divulge information.

She also expressed hope that the issue of Zakayev's extradition would see Poland meet its "international obligations."

Moscow wants Zakayev to return to Russia to face terrorism, murder, kidnapping and other charges and prosecutors said following his arrest that they were preparing an extradition request.

Zakayev, who took part in the first Chechen War and led attacks on federal forces, was placed on the international wanted list by Russia in 2001 but was granted political asylum by Britain in 2003. Russia has repeatedly asked Britain to extradite him, but the request has invariably been refused.

"There is a substantial risk that Mr Zakayev would himself be subject to torture," Judge Timothy Workman said in 2003, after ruling not to send the Chechen separatist back to Russia.

Moscow slammed the decision, accusing Britain of "double standards" in the war against terror.

"Once again, terrorists are being split into two groups - good terrorists and bad ones," the Russian Prosecutor General's Office said.

Earlier in the day Zakayev left Poland for London but should return later this week, his representative Adam Borowski said on Monday.

The former actor and militant was detained in Warsaw on September 17 and taken to a district prosecutor's office. He said he was on his way to the prosecutor's office to present materials relating to Russia's charges against him.

Zakayev, who has spoken out against Islamic radicalism in the North Caucasus, was "sentenced to death" by Chechnya's most wanted militant leader, Doku Umarov, in 2007.

"He practices a democratic religion, calls for secularism and prefers laws established by people to the law of Allah," the statement said.
