This week was marked by several big events. On September 23, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev held a meeting concerning a new police law. Among other statements Medvedev said the service pay of a police lieutenant will be, starting from January 1, 2012, not less than 33 thousand rubles (just over $1,000).

The Arctic: Territory of Dialogue international forum was held in Moscow on Wednesday and Thursday and also became one of the main events of this week.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin attended the forum. He said Russia is planning to revive and boost its scientific presence in the Arctic, to “clean up” the region.

On September 14, the 65th session of UN General Assembly started in New York. The Russian delegation is led by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Moscow participated in World Car Free Day for the third time on September 22. However the Russian capital saw no less traffic jams.

Sales of the iPhone 4 started early on Wednesday.

The rhythmic gymnastic world championship 2010 started on September 19. Russia's Evgeniya Kanaeva (right) won her fifth gold medal in the individual all-around event and her compatriot Dariya Kondakova (left) finished second.

Former Soviet vice-president and one of the leaders of the 1991 coup Gennady Yanayev died on September 24.
