Two militants were killed and one was detained during a special operation in Dagestan’s capital of Makhachkala on Friday evening, Russia’s National Antiterrorism Committee said.
Two police officers also died while protecting civilians from militant fire, the statement added.
“Law enforcement forces were carrying out an evacuation of nearby homes before the active phase of the operation when the criminals began firing wildly and throwing grenades,” the committee statement said.
It also said that a number of officers had been injured.
Militant attacks are frequent in volatile Dagestan, as well as in nearby Ingushetia.
