Serbia is ready for dialog on the status of Kosovo, which unilaterally proclaimed independence in 2008, with the leading role of the UN Security Council, President Boris Tadic said.
"I trust that we can enter a phase in which all parties will leave behind them anachronistic analyses and diplomatic ambushes. We must be able to build confidence to have trust," Tadic was quoted as saying by Serbia's Tanjug news agency.
He reiterated that Serbia was ready to engage in the process that would lead to a mutually-acceptable compromise solution through globally acknowledged international laws.
"The centrality and leading role of the Security Council in determining the comprehensive settlement of the Kosovo issue remains paramount, and would provide legitimacy to the result," the president said.
"This is why we have repeatedly said we seek dialogue but within a framework of globally acknowledged law. The law of the United Nations," he added.
The president, however, reiterated that his country's position on Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence remained unchanged.
"The unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo will not be recognized by Serbia explicitly or implicitly. This is enshrined in our constitution," Tadic was quoted as saying in his speech at the 65th Session of the UN General Assembly.
The UN International Court of Justice ruled on July 22 that Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia did not violate general international law. But Resolution 1244 on Serbia's territorial integrity remains in force.
A total of 69 out of 192 UN member states have recognized Kosovo, which unilaterally proclaimed independence in February 2008. Serbia, Russia, China, India and some other countries have not recognized it, saying international law was violated.
