The lower chamber of the Russian parliament will consider a bill on a new unified Investigative Committee proposed by President Dmitry Medvedev, the Kremlin said on Monday.
On Thursday, Medvedev proposed setting up a Unified Investigative Committee on the basis of the Investigative Committee of Russia's Prosecutor General's Office.
The bill, part of an overall shake-up of the country's criminal justice system, envisages the goals and the principles of the committee's activity.
The new committee will comprise of a chairman, his 13 deputies, including one first deputy, one deputy-secretary of state, and one deputy-head of the Main Military Investigative Committee.
The total number of staff will include 21,156 people in the headquarters and regional branches.
In future the new investigative body may be in charge of clearing up all or the majority of the criminal cases, Medvedev said.
Currently criminal cases are investigated by the investigative departments of the Interior Ministry, the Federal Security Service as well as the Federal Drug Control Service
