Spartak Moscow made light work of Slovakian outsiders Zilina at a rainswept Luzhniki Stadium on Wednesday evening to run out 3-0 winners and register their second win in two Group F matches.
The only Russian side to reach the last four of Europe’s most prestigious club competition started brightly, but had to wait until the 34th minute to open the scoring, Brazilian midfielder Ari heading home from a corner.
Zilina rarely threatened and Spartak doubled their lead after the break, Ari again shooting home from close range after a cross by Dmitry Kombarov in the 61st minute.
It was another Brazilian, Ibson, who scored the third, turning in a cross from fellow substitute Christian Maidana with a minute on the clock.
Spartak beat Marseille 1-0 away in the opening Group F fixture. Their next Champions League tie is at home to Chelsea on October 19. Chelsea and Marseille meet later on Wednesday in London.
