Former Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov has no political future, Russia's Federation Council Speaker Sergei Mironov said on Thursday.
President Dmitry Medvedev fired 74-year old Luzhkov, who had been mayor for more than 18 years, on Tuesday, citing "loss of confidence." The decision came after an unprecedented smear campaign by state-backed TV, accusing Luzhkov of negligence, callousness and corruption.
"I do not see any political prospects for Yury Luzhkov," Mironov said, commenting on a recent statement made by Luzhkov that he planned to return to the political arena.
Modern politics is for the young, Mironov added.
Experts say Medvedev's sacking of Luzhkov, formerly one of the most powerful politicians in Russia, may have been a bid to boost his authority ahead of the 2012 presidential elections.
