Ukrainian police have detained a 28-year-old unemployed woman in the Zaporozhye region in south Ukraine who tried to sell her two-year-old baby girl for 100,000 hryvnias ($12,500), the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.
The woman, a resident of the Berdyansk region, was detained by the police on Friday after receiving the sum of money from the buyer, the ministry said.
The baby was taken to the children's department of a district hospital while the woman has been charged with human trafficking linked with the illegal transfer of children abroad or for the removal of organs or tissues for transplantation, the ministry said.
If convicted, the woman faces from eight to 15 years in prison.
