Ukraine will hold a national day of mourning on Wednesday for the over 40 people killed when a train crashed into a passenger bus earlier on Tuesday.

The death toll in the accident has reached 43 people, the Ukrainian Emergencies Ministry said. Many of the injured are in a critical condition.

The accident occurred in the town of Marganets when a train en route to Krivoy Rog and Zaporozhye slammed into a passenger bus at a railway crossing. The bus driver drove onto the railroad, despite a warning from a railroad traffic control signal.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has visited the scene and pledged to pay compensation to the families of the victims.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev also expressed his condolences to Yanukovych.

"It is hard to express the feelings of compassion...If necessary we are ready to render any help to the injured," Medvedev said in a statement.

Medvedev also expressed his condolence to the relatives of those killed in the deadly crash.
