Russia should play a more active role in the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, the Palestinian National Authority's spokesman representative said on Tuesday.
Direct talks between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu resumed on September 2 in Washington, after an almost two-year hiatus. However, the talks are on the verge of breaking down over the issue of Israeli construction in the occupied West Bank.
"Russia can more actively assist in the process of the Middle East settlement, along with its partners in the Mideast Quartet (the U.S., the UN and the EU), through the good relations that it has with both sides - Palestinian and Israeli," Ghassan Khatib said.
He also said as Russia has traditionally good relations with other Arabic countries, which have influence in the region, it should more actively participate in the settlement process.
"We would like Russia and other members of the Quartet to play a more active role," he said.
