Russian league leaders Zenit St. Petersburg eased to a 2-0 victory over Croatia's Hajduk Split on Thursday, stretching their lead at the top of Europa League Group g to six points.
Although Zenit were without several regulars, Portuguese star Danny was a constant thorn in the visitors' side, but it was Russian striker Alexander Bukharov, making a rare start in place of Alexander Kerzhakov, who opened the scoring with a header after 25 minutes.
Despite occasional raids from the Croatians, Zenit always looked in control and Danny got the reward he deserved for a fine performance with a goal in the 68th minute, flashing in a cross after good work from Aleksandar Lukovic down the left wing.
In Belgium, Anderlecht got their first points with a 3-0 win over AEK Athens, leaving all Zenit's rivals in the group level on three points.
With their place in the knockout stages virtually assured, the St. Petersburgers can now focus on closing out their second Russian title in four years. They lead defending champions Rubin by six points, with two games in hand and just eight to play.
