Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, who entered office last week, has given the order to clean the capital's streets with vacuum cleaners, the City Hall's press service said on Monday.
"The mayor noted that despite the streets being clean, the city's air is polluted by dust," the statement said.
There are no further details on the type of vacuum cleaners to be used.
Pollution levels soared during this summer's smog crisis, with health authorities warning people to reduce their time outside.
Sobyanin, 52, was approved overwhelmingly by the Moscow legislature, dominated by the pro-Kremlin United Russia party. He replaced Yury Luzhkov, sacked by President Dmitry Medvedev in September after an 18-year tenure.
