Vietnam is one of Russia's key strategic partners in the Asia-Pacific region, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on the eve of his meeting with leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Medvedev arrived on Saturday in Hanoi to attend the Russia-ASEAN summit in Vietnam.
"Several Russian companies plan to take part in the construction of new electric power plants and in the modernization of the existing electric power facilities in Vietnam," Medvedev said in an article published in Vietnamese media.
The Russian president said Vietnam was one of the few foreign countries to participate in the oil extraction on the Russian territory.
"The RusVietPetro joint venture has already began the development of oil deposits in the Nenets autonomous district," Medvedev said.
The company, registered in 2008, is 51 percent owned by Russia's Zarubezhneft with the rest belonging to Vietnam's state-run PetroVietnam. It has recoverable reserves of 95 million tons in the Nenets district.
Medvedev also emphasized the Russian-Vietnamese bilateral cooperation in such areas as nuclear power generation, telecommunications, tool-making, banking, and space exploration.
In addition, Vietnam recently emerged as a key importer of Russian weaponry after it signed a deal to buy six Kilo class submarines, aircraft and other military hardware from Russia late last year.
