Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has addressed a letter to Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan in which he thanked him for invitation to the forthcoming Asia Pacific Economic Leaders' Meeting under the APEC summit, the Kremlin said.
The Asia Pacific (APEC) summit will be held on November 13-14 in the Japanese city of Yokohama.
"I share the opinion about the importance of APEC's role in the expansion of multilateral political and economic cooperation in the Asia Pacific region in order to find effective responses to the modern challenges," Medvedev's letter said.
"I expect that we will argue out a package of joint measures to tackle consequences of the global economic downturn, work out definitive development model in the APEC region in the post-crisis period with emphasis on economic and social security," Medvedev's letter said.
Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan said on Tuesday he is not sure if his forthcoming meeting with Dmitry Medvedev at the APEC summit will go ahead.
Japan's ambassador to Russia was temporarily recalled following Medvedev's visit to one of the four disputed Kuril islands on Monday. Japan called the visit "regrettable."
The islands are at the centre of a long-running territorial dispute between Moscow and Tokyo. They were seized by the Soviet Union at the end of World War II and both countries have laid claim to them ever since.
