Japan thanks U.S. for support in disputes with China, Russia

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan thanked the United States on Saturday for supporting Tokyo in a series of recent disputes with Russia and China.

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan thanked the United States on Saturday for supporting Tokyo in a series of recent disputes with Russia and China.

During a meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama, he reiterated the importance of the U.S. presence in the Asia Pacific region.

"We have agreed on the need to develop [bilateral] cooperation. I thanked [Obama] for the constant support that the United States has provided us at a time when Japan has run into problems in its relations with China and Russia." Kan said.

Obama invited Kan to visit the United States in spring 2011.
