NATO does not represent any threat for Russia, according to the alliance's new strategic concept accepted in Lisbon on Friday by the 28 NATO members.
The new strategic concept also states that it wishes for a true strategic partnership between NATO and Russia and will act accordingly in answer to Russia's reciprocity.
This is the first time NATO has stated in writing that it does not represent any threat to Russia.
The new document states that the partnership between Russia and NATO has a strategic importance in that it aids in the creation of a common area of peace, stability and security.
The relation between Russia and NATO is based on the goals, principles and obligations of the Russia-NATO Fundamental Act and the Rome Declaration, which concerns the respect of democratic principles and sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all states in the Euro-Atlantic region, according to the new strategic concept.
