Some 50% of the population is native Fijians and 48% are Indo-Fijians. Indians were sent to the islands by colonialists to work on sugar cane and coconut palm plantations between 1879 and 1916. They practically do not mix with the native Fijians and preserve their traditional culture.
The locals perform ritual dances just like hundreds of years ago. But there is a special tradition of drinking kava, a beverage with mild sedatives made from the root of pepper.
The participants of the ceremony sit cross-legged on the floor in a meeting house (fale fono) or on the ground covered by mats. Kava is made from dried pepper roots.
After the call “Kava is ready!” a cup-bearer fills the cups, brings them to his forehead and hands them to the guests in order of their importance or social rank. While they drink the bitter beverage, all the official participants of the ceremony accept traditional gifts.
The master of ceremonies usually chews pepper roots, then spits them into a bowl and adds water to create a muddy mass-like paste, which is filtered through a cloth and drunk. However, tourists can get kava in souvenir bags.
