A new French-made Allegro high-speed train launched between St. Petersburg and Helsinki on December 12 ran over an elk on its maiden run, a transport police spokeswoman said on Tuesday.
The spokeswoman said the train driver saw three elk crossing the tracks on Sunday.
"He used the emergency brake but the train still clipped the last elk, and the animal died," she said, adding that none of passengers was injured and the train was not damaged in the incident.
The dead elk's body was handed over to a local gamekeeper.
