Former Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov might have been sacked for "unsporting behavior," Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said during his annual Q&A session on Thursday.
Long-serving Luzhkov, 74, was fired by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's decree on September 28 after weeks of speculation about his worsening relations with the Kremlin and his imminent resignation or dismissal. New mayor Sergei Sobyanin took office on October 21.
The host of "A Conversation with Vladimir Putin: Continued" asked the prime minister about the reasons for Luzhkov's dismissal and called the former mayor's behavior "not exactly sporting, in fact - totally unsporting."
"Maybe, for 'unsporting behavior'? But this question is not for me," Putin said.
The prime minister added that Luzhkov should have built proper relations with the Russian president.
