The streets and courtyards of St. Petersburg are a complete mess. The sidewalks are impassible, so people risk their lives by walking in the streets. Every walkway is buried under snow. And the yards have not been cleared at all.

Tourists who arrived to what is known as Russia’s cultural capital are not amused either. They are unable to reach sites such as the Pushkin Apartment Museum or the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood: there is no public transportation and walking is too risky.

In St. Petersburg, where as much as 70 cm of fresh snow has fallen since December 7, the streets are being cleared by more than a thousand workers and more than 1,100 snow plows. Nevertheless, many streets both downtown and in the suburbs are still buried under the snow.

Many streets in St. Petersburg are still covered in snow.

Icicles on buildings along the streets are potentially dangerous to pedestrians.

Like last winter, the roofs of buildings are cleared with shovels and ice choppers.
