Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Wednesday visited the Moskovsky Sports and Fitness Center in St. Petersburg, where freestyle, Greco-Roman, judo and Sambo wrestlers held a joint practice and analyzed the results of recent competitions. Putin was shown around the center and then changed into a judo-gi to take part in the joint practice.
In conclusion, he made a go at the Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling. The athletes showed him different types of lock and throw techniques, after which Putin tried to execute them.
Putin began with simple throws, similar to those used in judo, and in conclusion tried to perform a more complicated throw during which the wrestler flips his opponent while dropping to his back and turning over in the air.
The joint practice is part of a program between the Sport and Tourism Ministry and the national wrestling federations to prepare for the Olympic try-outs in 2011.
Putin, who is a master of sports in judo and has done much to promote this martial art, regularly meets with athletes and even joins them in training. A year ago, he visited the High Achievements Sport School in St. Petersburg, where he trained with members of the national team for an hour. He also co-authored the book Let's Learn Judo with Vladimir Putin and took part in the instructional film based on the book in 2008.
