The investigation department of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) has launched a new criminal case against ex-intelligence officer Vladimir Kvachkov, who is now suspected of preparing an armed rebellion and involvement in terrorist activities.
In August, a jury found Kvachkov not guilty of the 2005 attempt to kill Anatoly Chubais, former head of the UES electricity giant and architect of post-Soviet reforms. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court upheld the acquittal, but on Thursday a Moscow court sanctioned his arrest on the new case.
Kvachkov denies the accusations, saying they are based on false allegations that he and members of an organization he leads were plotting a coup.
