Two militants were killed in a special police operation on Sunday in Makhachkala, Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, a spokesman for the anti-terrorism committee said.
A group of about five militants barricaded themselves in a private house in Makhachkala.
"Two of them have been shot," the spokesman said adding that no police officers were injured in the operation.
The gunmen are suspected of killing of a policeman in Makhachkala on Thursday.
The assailants opened gunfire on a police patrol when they were stopped.
Earlier on Sunday, a counterterrorist regime was imposed in the city.
According to the National Anti-Terrorist Committee, more than half of all terrorist attacks in the North Caucasus in 2010 have occurred in Dagestan.
