A bus crashed with a truck in southern Egypt on Sunday killing eight tourists from the United States and injuring another 21 people, Egypt's news agency Al Ahram reported.

The road accident occurred when the bus was taking 37 U.S. tourists from Aswan to a historic site of Abu Simbel. The vehicle was part of a column consisting of three buses with a total of 116 tourists.

The agency said citing local traffic police that the truck hit the bus at full speed. However, the MENA news agency said the bus ran into the truck that was parked on a roadside.

Among those injured are 19 U.S. tourists and two Egyptian nationals. All of them have been hospitalized. The driver has survived the crash.

Road accidents are common in Egypt. Some 8,000 people are killed on the road annually and thousands of others are injured. Authorities say the main causes are poorly maintained vehicles, speeding and cars illegally entering the oncoming lane.
