An Azerbaijani soldier was seriously wounded in an alleged attack by the Armenian military in the disputed Nagorny Karabakh region on Thursday, the country's defense ministry said.
"The Armenian Armed Forces gunned the positions of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces from the village of Marzilli in the Agdam district at approximately 8:15 a.m. local time [04:15 GMT]," a statement from the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said.
Private Ulvi Guseinov is reported to be in a serious condition after suffering gunshot wounds to his arm and chest.
Armenia has been involved in a bitter dispute with neighboring Azerbaijan over Nagorny Karabakh since 1988, when the ethnic Armenian region broke away from Azerbaijan and sought support from Armenia.
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said in December that Armenia would have to recognize Nagorny Karabakh as an independent state if Azerbaijan attacked it.
