A Japanese cargo freighter docked with the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday, a spokesman for Russian Mission Control said.

"The docking was successfully carried out at 17:45 Moscow time [14:45 GMT]," the spokesman said.

Nicknamed Kounotori 2 (Japanese for "white stork"), HTV2 blasted off on a H-2B carrier rocket from Japan's Tanegashima Space Center at 14:37 local time (05:37 GMT) on Saturday.

The launch was originally scheduled for last Thursday, but was delayed due to adverse weather conditions.

The spacecraft delivered nearly 4,000 kg of scientific gear, crew provisions, spare parts and computers.

The first HTV freighter was launched to the ISS in September 2009. Japan expects to send one of the cargo ships to the orbiter each year until 2015.
