The lives of Russian students studying at Cairo University are not in any danger, Russian Ambassador to Egypt Mikhail Bogdanov said on Monday.
A total of 120 Russian students, including about 50 from the mainly Muslim republic of Bashkortostan, are taking training courses in Egypt.
According to most recent information, 27 Russian students are stuck in a dormitory at Cairo University. Earlier in the day they asked to be evacuated from the volatile country.
The Russian ambassador visited the dormitory on Monday. He called the situation in the district where the dormitory is located calm. There is no direct threat to the lives of the students, Bogdanov said, adding that all of the students could buy tickets home themselves if they wished.
The 27 students told the embassy that they were running low on food and water.
"That's understandable because many stores are closed, supermarkets have been looted, but overall there is no food crisis here," Bogdanov said.
At least 150 people have been killed and about 4,000 injured in the riots as anti-government protests continue for a seventh day in Egypt. Embattled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, 82, has rejected calls from protesters to resign.
The president dismissed the previous cabinet on Saturday. He then appointed former Air Force commander Ahmed Shafiq as the new premier. Meanwhile, a number of opposition groups have asked opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei to form a national unity government.
