In the outskirts of San Diego, migrants can be seen everywhere. “We are waiting for any job opportunity: we can carry loads, paint walls, mow lawns,” one Mexican national told RIA Novosti while waiting for a job beside Home Depot.
A unique place on the U.S.-Mexican border. Here the border is marked by a hardly noticeable yellow strip drawn along a concrete canal. Now the water barely runs here and outcast Mexicans, such as drug addicts, alcoholics and HIV-positive people have settled in.
In Colonia Libertad one can find a guide across the border, who is aware not only of the gaps but knows the border guards’ detailed schedule. The price of border crossing is $2,000. If a migrant is lucky enough to escape the border guards, there is still an ordeal ahead in the desert.
Understanding the hardships of the desert, the activists of Border Angels charity organization leave water for the runaways. Illegal migrants can often find crosses beside the water planted in memory of those who died crossing the border.
Border guards have to admit that the sea border is easy to cross. It is not rare for migrants to swim around the ramshackle wall to the other side or paddle surf boards loaded with drugs to U.S. territory.
The border is a threat not only to illegal migrants, but also to border guards and their patrol dogs. This monument to a dog killed in the line of duty has been erected at the local border guards’ headquarters.
One more unique place at the border: the meeting point for two peoples. On weekends border guards allow migrants who are waiting on U.S. territory for their documents to be processed to approach the border and meet with their families.
