The breakaway Moldovan region of Transdnestr is ready to resume talks on its status, its leader said on Wednesday.

The breakaway Moldovan region of Transdnestr is ready to resume talks on its status, its leader said on Wednesday.

Pro-Russian hardliners led a breakaway from Moldova in 1991. 5+2 talks involving Russia, Ukraine, the OSCE, Moldova, Transdnestr, as well as the U.S. and the EU, stalled in 2006.

"We have set out a plan to resolve the issue," Transdnestr leader Igor Smirnov said after talks with OSCE Chairman Audronius Azubalis in the region's capital, Tiraspol.

Transdnestr seeks full independence, while Moldova says it is only ready to give it autonomy.
