Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is likely to step down tonight, BBC and CNN said on Thursday.

Mubarak, who has run Egypt for 30 years, is likely to announce his resignation tonight, the secretary general of Egypt's ruling National Democratic Party, Houssam Badrawi, told CNN. Al Jazeera quoted Badrawi as saying that it would be right for Mubarak to "step aside."

Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq told the BBC that Mubarak's resignation is being discussed.

Egyptian Information Minister Anas al-Feki dismissed the reports about the possible resignation of Mubarak, Reuters said.

“The president is still in power, and he is not going to step down,” al-Feki told Reuters, adding that media reports that Mubarak will step down soon are just rumors.

Anti-government protests have hit Egypt since January 25 with protesters demanding Mubarak's resignation.
