Police have detained 14 participants of an unsanctioned protest in downtown Moscow staged by the Day of Wrath rally organizers, a police spokesperson said on Saturday.
Earlier on Saturday, Russia's opposition held the Day of Wrath rally at the monument to Karl Marx on Teatralnaya Square. The event was authorized for the first time by the Mayor's Office and gathered some 300 opposition activists.
However, after the rally its participants, led by Left Front opposition movement leader Sergei Udaltsov, attempted to stage an unsanctioned protest in front of the Russian president's administration.
"Fourteen people, including Udaltsov, were detained and taken to a police station for further investigation," the spokesperson said.
Requests to authorize the Day of Wrath rallies were invariably turned down by the Moscow authorities in the past, while unauthorized protests were dispersed by police.
