Two militants were killed in a shootout with police in downtown Nazran, in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia, a police source said on Saturday.
The shootout started after police attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle. The militants offered armed resistance and were killed in the return fire from police. The local Federal Security Service (FSB) has confirmed the report.
A source in Ingushetia's Interior Ministry said the militants could be involved in the killing of a head of a local administration, Alikhan Tsoroyev.
The official died in a Nazran hospital in late January after he was attacked by unknown assailants, who opened fire on his vehicle.
