Some 10,000 people celebrated on Thursday Belgium's world record in the city of Ghent for facing the longest political crisis.
Belgium has been without a government for 249 days as the politicians from the country's Dutch- and French-speaking regions have so far failed to come to a consensus since elections on June 13, 2010.
Belgians staged a huge party where some young participants stripped down to their underwear to draw attention to the political crisis and mark the occasion.
Some other "revolutions" were used to shame the country's long-warring factions into coming up with a working government. A French Fries revolution was held in Leuven where people were treated to the potato snack since Belgium is home to the world-famous dish. Beard-growing and calls to abstain from sex were a few more events held. A general demonstration under the slogan "Shame!" was organized on late January, when the country set the record in Europe for having the longest period of a nonfunctioning government. The previous European record of 208 days was held by the Netherlands in 1977.
After the 2007 parliamentary elections, Belgium lived without a new government for almost nine months. The federal government of the country has been led by the politicians representing the Dutch-language majority. King Albert II has taken charge of the country until a new government is formed.
