Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Friday told members of Russia's Security Council that they must deal with any attempts to disrupt the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Friday told members of Russia's Security Council that they must deal with any attempts to disrupt the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Sochi, a sub-tropical resort on the Russian Black Sea coast, is located close both to Russia's volatile North Caucasus and to the border of former Georgian republic, Abkhazia.

"Forces that try to disrupt the Olympics must be detected and brought to justice," the president said.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the ministers of foreign affairs, defense and interior, special service chiefs and the speakers of both chambers of parliament attended the meeting in Krasnaya Polyana, which will host the Nordic and downhill skiing competitions at the 2014 Games.

"You are also fully aware that we have certain problems with our neighbor, Georgia," Medvedev went on. "All issues that require special attention from our foreign ministry, law-enforcement agencies and special services must be dealt with."

Georgia, which fought a brief war with Russia in August 2008, said last November its parliament has been drafting a plan of an international campaign against the Games in Russia.

Following the August war, the Georgian National Olympic sent a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) asking for the games to be moved from Sochi for security reasons. The IOC replied that security issues were a purely domestic matter for the host country.

At the meeting, Medvedev urged the officials to "create a solid shield against any provocations," adding that "planning security measures requires additional focus and discussion."

Russia's deputy premier in charge of Olympic preparations, Dmitry Kozak, pledged last year that Russia will not introduce "draconian" security measures during the Olympics.
