Libyan security forces stormed a protest camp in the eastern city of Benghazi early on Saturday, with eyewitnesses claiming some people have been killed and injured in the crackdown.

Police have attacked hundreds of demonstrators who gathered in Benghazi two days ago. The troops used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd, local media reported.

Earlier on Saturday, Internet was cut in Libya in a move by authorities to disrupt the demonstrations.

The protests in Libya, one of the world's major oil suppliers, started on February 15 amid violent anti-government demonstrations across the Middle East.

Human Rights Watch said at least 84 people have been killed by security forces in the Libyan protests against the rule of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, who has been accused of human rights abuses.

Libya's prosecutors have launched an investigation, promising to punish those guilty of violence.
