Thousands of protesters in the central square in the capital of Bahrain, Manama, are refusing to enter talks with the authorities until the government resigns, and say they will continue to protest until the government accedes to their demands.
Even though the Crown Prince has publically said that negotiations with the opposition are underway, thousands of protestors are continuing their rally in the central square. The slogan “The people want to overthrow the regime!” which was recently shouted in Cairo’s Tahrir Square is heard ever more frequently. The protestors claim that their discontent is rooted in low living standards.
The unrest in Bahrain started on February 14 against the backdrop of successful uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt. By Tuesday the unrest had reached the capital, as protesters set up a tent camp in Pearl Square in the center of Manama. Most of the protesters are Shiite Muslims who are demanding more rights from the country’s ruling Sunni Muslims.
