The European Union has sent a high-level technical mission to troubled Libya to assess the humanitarian needs of the people and monitor evacuation efforts, the press service of the EU foreign affairs chief said on Sunday.
It will be the first foreign mission to Libya since the riots began last month. EU experts will have to report on the humanitarian situation in the oil-rich North African country to the emergency EU summit on Libya in Brussels on March 11.
Libya has been rocked with protests demanding the resignation of the 42-year leader Muammar Gaddafi since February 15. The authorities are fiercely suppressing the riots, and at least 6,000 people have already been killed, according to international organizations.
