A Tsunami caused by a massive earthquake off the east coast of Japan on Wednesday has reached the U.S. state of Hawaii, the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported.

A 65 cm wave hit the island of Kauai, which has a population of about 50,000 people.

The Hawaiian authorities have evacuated residents and tourists ahead of further waves, expected to reach around two meters.

The 8.9-magnitude quake near Japan earlier on Friday was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks.

A tsunami more than 7.3 meters high hit the Soma port in the Fukushima Prefecture, while a wave more than four meters high hit the ports of Kamaishi and Miyako in Iwate Prefecture, the country's Meteorological Agency said.

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa has declared a state of emergency in the South American country and ordered residents of the Galapagos Islands to be evacuated.

"We are ready for any scenario...the emergency services are on the high alert," Correa said.

Peru, Columbia, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras are also on high tsunami alert.
