Even in a worst-case scenario, fallout from a possible nuclear disaster in Japan is unlikely to reach Russian territory, Russian nuclear experts said on Monday.
"According to our calculations, the vast majority of nuclear substances will fall out in the vicinity of the Japanese Fukushima 1 [Nuclear Power Plant] in any case," Alexander Lokshin, a deputy head of the Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, told journalists.
"As far as radiation is concerned, we can say for sure that it will not reach Russia," said Leonid Bolshov, Director of Nuclear Safety Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences.
The cooling system at Japan's Fukushima 1 NPP was knocked out by a powerful earthquake and tsunami on Friday that is believed to have left at least 10,000 people dead in northeastern Japan.
Explosions rocked the first and third units of the plant, and fears of a new possible blast were raised on Monday as coolant disappeared from the second unit's cooling system, leaving nuclear rods bare.
